SWIFT BIC Validation, more than just a format checker
Checking the format of a SWIFT BIC is no guarantee of its validity. There are billions of combinations of alphanumeric characters that could theoretically constitute a valid 8 character BIC code in compliance with international standards, but in fact little more than 22,000 codes are actually in use world wide.
The only way to know for sure that a SWIFT BIC is correct is to check against the latest official directory issued by the SWIFT organisation. BankVal International is a unique web service that allows you to do just this, from any point in your systems.
What is a SWIFT BIC code?
S.W.I.F.T (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications) is the designated registered authority for the assignment and publication of BICs and the BIC directory.
Banks use the SWIFT communications system to send and receive messages to each other.
A BIC (Bank Identifier Code) is a unique reference number or code to identify all banks on the SWIFT network. |
